Outaf's touch

Outaf Adnan of TRIO Couture
With the Bride Show only days away, it is a miracle that Outaf Adnan of TRIO Couture found the time to sit down with me and talk about her collection for the upcoming show.

The first time I walked in Outaf's studio for a photo shoot some time late last year, I was mesmerized. It wasn't grand or as big as Harvey Nichols or the Chanel boutique on Rue Cambon, but it had a touch to it. Outaf's touch. Just like all her designs, her space is as personal and unique as it can get. It was neat, with every little detail taken care of by Outaf. Everything was in its place.

"This is real work. This is how I work." - Outaf Adnan
But this time around, the room was filled with fabrics, pins, and sewing materials. Regina, her assistant, was on the floor giving the final touches for two dresses that were going to be part of the show. Outaf, probably sensing my shock, told me with a smile, "This is real work. This is how I work."

After taking a few photos of the two dresses that she has allowed me to make public, she invited me over to the couch where I had numerous shots of for the photo shoot we had last year.

"So tell me what you want to know." She asked. Outaf has always been very helpful to and supportive of young fashion designers-in-the-making like me. She believes that the young designers have so much potential, and with proper and adequate experience, they could give the veterans and the professionals a run for their money.

First, I ask her about how TRIO Couture started. "TRIO Couture is founded by myself and two of my friends, Fatima Kaddas and Houda Al Shamsi. We've been planning this for three years, but it was only in September of 2010 that we officially opened." Hence the name, TRIO Couture.

She stops and excuses herself for a while to check how the dresses were going. And when she got back, we continued where we left off. "I've been working in the industry for more than 20 years, 14 years in Baghdad and around 8 years here in Abu Dhabi. But, ever since I was young, being a child of a leather crafts businessman, I became very familiar with all the machines. My father owns a big factory that produces leather goods, from belts to bags. I was in there a lot. And that was what started my love for fashion. I am very hardworking. I couldn't last a long time without doing anything. Ask my daughters. They know this very well." she tells me with a laugh, gesturing to her eldest daughter, Mina, who is also helping her mother with the collection. Mina just nods and smiles at me in agreement.

But who is Outaf? I was expecting a very straightforward answer, like telling me directly what she thinks of herself and of how she works. But instead, she tells me, "I can be anything. I have a lot of ideas, but I am still eager to learn. I think I have a lot of things to show, and if given the chance, I will show them." I think the way she answered made me more excited to see her show. It was like a cliff-hanger, making the reader or the audience guess what will happen next. It is very stimulating, which I think is just what the fashion world needs nowadays.

And now she has that chance. The Bride Show 2011 is her first show  in Abu Dhabi to show the people here what she's capable of. "I don't have a specific inspiration for this collection. In fact, it is a wide variety of my own style. It will show you the many faces of Outaf." She says laughing. Does this collection have a name? She ponders for a moment before telling me that she really didn't think about it, but "The Many Faces of Outaf" caught her attention, so she left it at that.

She continued to tell me that if there was one consistent inspiration for this collection it would be the fabrics that she has used. "Whenever I design, the fabrics talk to me. It tells me what it wants to look like. It's like.." She trails off, thinking of the right word. Magic? I suggested. And she agreed. "Yes, yes. It's like magic. Everything just falls into place."

a sneak peek of her collection for The Bride Show

"This collection will be featuring 23 haute couture dresses, 3 wedding dresses, 5 simple dresses with glamorous chiffon abayas over them, and around 4 stylish abayas that reflects my personal style. I played a lot with tulle, because it gives me the right volume for the shape of the woman." She adds.

There will be around 16 designers that will be joining this show, Lebanese designer Tony Yaacoub among them. What distinguishes your designs from others? "I want to make abayas that all people can wear, not just the Arabs. I want each woman's personality to reflect her personal style. I want her to carry the dress in a way that she shines brighter, not the other way around." It is one of the things I admire about her. She knows and understands her market very well without trying to. It was just natural. You could say that this is something that she was born to do.

"Here in my shop, I only sell 3 or 4 pieces for each design. My designs are exclusive and unique. You won't find it anywhere. They're simple, but they have a touch."She said as she gave me a sneak peek of what to expect on her show on the 3rd of February at the ADNEC.

I was blown away. I started jumping up and down like a little girl and hugged her. I can't wait to see them all on the runway. But before we come to an end, I remembered to ask her what advice she can give to young designers and enthusiasts who are in their own journey to become the designer that they want to be.

"Be patient. Things like these don't happen overnight. Work really hard. Try, try, and try again. Experiment. Be open to learning new things. Stitch. Design. Work with patterns. But most of all, learn from your mistakes."

Outaf is really an inspiration to a lot of designers who are just starting in the industry. I even told her that she seemed like the Middle East version of Coco Chanel, because of her love for fabrics and with how she started. Her collection is definitely a must-see at this year's Bride Show.

TRIO Couture will be showcasing their collection on the 3rd of February at 6pm in ADNEC (Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre).

Hiatus!

Hey guys! Sorry if it seems like no one is updating this anymore. Like what I said in my previous posts, I am still being bombarded by Final exams which leaves me no time to blog anymore. BUT, no worries! I'm doing great and most probably be back in time for The Bride Show, Abu Dhabi, happening on February 2, 2011 until February 5, 2011 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre.  Shows start at 2:30pm and ends at 10:30pm daily. Hopefully, I'll see you guys there, yes? :)

So, as much as I hate being away from blogging for a long time, I have to lay off of it for a while. I need to pass my Finals, so that I can finally be a semester (or two) away from graduation. Whooo. Anyway, stay tuned guys!

I'll be back before you know it!

Of music videos and sunglasses

From my previous post, I mentioned that I've been watching KPOP(Korean Pop) music videos lately. One of the music videos I love is Go Away by 2NE1. I just love its catchy beat and the concept of the video. But what I loved more are their outfits. They wore a lot of leather and prints, which I think is a very good combination. On top of all that though,  these pair of sunglasses that was worn by CL, the group's leader, caught my eye (no pun intended).

I love this particular pair the most. The shape is very interesting and the studs around them looks very badass. ;-) I've been looking for it all over the web and found that Linda Farrow is the one who designed it. It's available in net-a-porter.com for 155EUR (about 700DHS).

Order them from http://www.net-a-porter.com now!

Here is another pair from the same video that I love. At first, I thought it was from Ray-Ban. But after doing a little research, it is actually from Thierry Lasry. I can't find the exact design from their latest collection. But, the ones that are available are also very stylish. I love the colors! I hope they have something in turquoise or pink, though. :-)

This is the pair from the video.

Sunglasses is one of the accessories that I can't live without, especially if you're leaving in a place like Abu Dhabi where it's always sunny. I've always worn aviators, but I think that I would be trying on new shapes this year for a change. But since these are so expensive, I'll be keeping an eye out for cheaper alternatives. I hope you'll do the same too. ;-)

All things Seoul-ful

Before anything else, I would like to apologize for my long absence. School has been really really tough lately which is why I can't find any spare time for the blog. The past week marked the start of our Finals, and being part of the fashion department, that doesn't mean tests, reports or presentations like one would normally do for other courses. All our requirements are practical-based. So, that doubles the time and effort one would need to complete a project. It's fun and I'm always excited to do stuff that would let me be creative. But, the stress and the pressure that comes with it is way more than enough to drive a person nuts.

So, to keep myself sane, I've been very interested in all things Korea lately, particularly in their music and fashion. I listen to Korean Pop or KPOP music every time I work. I know. It's a very descriptive way of self-medication, but it's really helping me keep the stress under control. And if I have spare time which is usually while I am in the bus on the way to school, I watch some of their music videos. It's the perfect escape. It takes my mind off of fashion for a while, but of course, I can never get it out of my mind.

These boys are rocking my world right now. :-)

The fashionista in me would always kick in as I admire their sense of style. I love how they get creative with their layers, and how they can experiment with their accessories. They also love colors, mixing and matching them to suit their style which is playful, quirky, and loud. But, they can also tone it down and make it look soft, chic, and prim, while still keeping their unique fun character.

I just love the way these girls made black and white more classy and their layers are just awesome!

One of the many examples of playful and quirky Korean fashion!

She has blown me away, and actually made me want to lose weight right now!
I f I were just as skinny as her, I'd be rocking this outfit everyday. :-)

SNSD's Sooyoung and Hyoyeon

And it turns out that I'm not the only one who noticed how great the style of Koreans are. The Sartorialist, Scott Schumann, went to Seoul a few days back and will be returning on the 24th for a project. Wow. I hope I can go there too, so I can see (and shoot) these stylish people for myself. Seoul is definitely on my travel bucket list. Someday, Seoul. :-)

I would also love to meet some Koreans here in Abu Dhabi. I think we have quite a number of them in the city. It would be really great to talk to them about their style and how they think it is different from Abu Dhabi's, don't you think? :-)

Stylish Blogger Award ❤

Earlier this week, The Mazuona received its first ever award, *drumroll please* the Stylish Blogger Award, from the awesome Victoria Hughes of Garden of Eden Designs!

Thank you so so much again for this award, Victoria! I wish you all the best in your blog (and in everything else!). Continue being stylish and inspiring a lot of people! :-)

But of course, the one who receives this award has to do the following things:

1.  Thank and link back to the person who awarded you this award.
2.  Share 7 things about yourself.
3.  Award 15 recently discovered great bloggers.
4.  Contact these bloggers and tell them about the award!

So that's what I'm about to do now. First things first, I'm going to share the seven things about me. But, I believe that the Biography page of this site has already told you enough information. So, let's twist this a little bit. I'm going to tell you seven things that you might not know about me. :-) Here they are:

1. The most basic fact that a lot of people might not know or might have just overlooked is that my second name is Mae. That's what my family calls me, especially the young kids. So, my full name is Eura Mae. But please don't start calling me that. ;-))

2. I run on a nocturnal schedule, a(n) (evil) creature of the night. I find that I work the best at this time. I can't think well if everyone in our house is still awake. I work from around 11 in the evening till 3 in the morning. If I'm lucky (no job for the day) I get to sleep in until around 10. But if not, then I have to make sure that my work is finished by 12.

3. I have too many black clothes, especially dresses. If I like a certain item (clothes, shoes, accessories), I would always go for the black one. But my favorite color is turquoise. I just think that black is so versatile and classy.

The dark side of my closet. They're not complete though. And they're totally messy. Sorry. :-)

4. Karl Lagerfeld and I share the same birthday. So, if you want to know my birthday, google his. ;-) Yes, I had to share that. It's a fact that I am very proud of. To have a connection with someone you look up to is such an honor, even if it's just sharing the day of your birth.

5. I have a total of 9 tattoo designs that I would want to get permanently inked on various parts of my body. They are certain words, music lyrics, quotations and symbols that mean so much to me. I'm just waiting for my parents to agree, and I swear I will run off to the first tattoo parlor I can find.

6. I am a lyrics girl. It means that I value the lyrics of a song more than its rhythm. If the lyrics is something I can relate to/that inspires me, then I would love it no matter how its rhythm sucks.

7. Things that I can't leave the house without: my Blackberry, my iPod, sunglasses, wallet, at least one notebook and pen, makeup kit, and perfume. I swear. No matter how far I am from the house, I have to go back and get whatever I forgot to bring.

L-R: my makeup kit, notebook, sunglasses, Blackberry, wallet, Alabaster by Banana Republic, iPod
There you go guys. I hope you had fun discovering new things about me. I think I got carried away there for a bit. I really tend to talk too much. Anyway, now we're off to my favorite bloggers. I am a big fan of everyone. They are who I visit the most and I am very inspired by each of them. I hope you also take time to visit their pages and be inspired as well.

The Coveted

The list goes on. I think this wasn't enough to show all the bloggers that continue to inspire me. So, if you want to know all of them, visit the Blog Roll  page. Have fun!

Spotted at the bus stop, Defence Road

It's one of those days when I have to literally drag myself out of the house to get some inspiration. And so, drag myself out of the house I did. I didn't have an exact destination in mind. All I wanted to do was just get out of the house, get on the bus, and find inspiration somewhere in the city.

And while trying to do that, I met Ping while waiting for the bus to arrive. She was there before me, and even from afar, she stood out. Mainly, because there was no one else in the area except for a couple of Indian guys. But, it was because of her boots. I don't know why but it seems like boots have been catching my attention lately.

It took me ten minutes to talk to her and ask if I could take some photos. At first, I was quite satisfied with taking them candidly. But then her dress was just so stylish that I knew I had to get a good photo. I don't how Scott Schumann does it, but I really find it hard to approach a stranger for their photo. Mostly, because I don't want to get rejected. I'm scared that they might say no. So far, I haven't been rejected. And I hope it stays that way.

I love this particular photo. Although, I wish she suddenly turned her head in my direction. But the way her hair was swaying in the wind was really beautiful.

And then, I finally had the courage to talk to her. When I told her I wanted to take her photo, she smiled brightly. And I silently thanked God that she didn't say no. She was really more than willing to do so, and for that, I am really grateful. I wish I was able to take more pictures, but as if on cue, the bus arrived and we both ran to catch it. :-)

We continued our conversation inside the bus. And I started to ask her where she got her outfit out of curiosity. She got her boots from China, while her dress and cardigan were from here. At first, she was hesitant to tell me where she got them, saying that they weren't expensive. But I told her that it doesn't matter to me. I may be a fan of luxurious brands, but they're just that. A luxury. The price doesn't define the quality of an outfit. Most of my clothes are from H&M and Forever 21. And even so, I buy only when they are on sale.

It was really nice talking to her. She has a lot of insight regarding the fashion scene in Abu Dhabi, and how it is different from what she is used to in her homeland, China. The bus was almost to my stop, and I felt a pang of regret leaving Ping. Meeting her made me remember why The Mazuona is existing. And it's a great feeling to know that you have a purpose. If you are reading this Ping, I hope you know that you have inspired me. :-)

By then, I finally decided to spend my day at Starbucks on Najda street, hoping to see more Mazuonas along the way. But it seems like fate decided that it was enough for the day. And so these two Starbucks favorites kept me company. I finally got to use the 50 Dhs Starbucks gift voucher that one of our family friends gave me for Christmas.

Strawberry cheesecake and some Toffee nut Frappucino

I spent my time writing my goals for this year, both for my blog and for myself. Looking around the empty cafe and on what I have written on the notebook in front of me, it's one of those days when you know dragging yourself out of the house was a good decision. :-)
